BORN: 1901 in Detroit, MI
DIED: 1987 in Milwaukee, WI
(Giacomo Mercurio Spicuzza was not related to Wisconsin's notable painter Francesco Spicuzza)
Giacomo was born in 1904 and grew up in downtown Detroit, Michigan. He attended art classes at Cass Technical High School and received his formal art education at the John Wicker School of Fine Arts. Faculty at the Wicker School included Sarkis Sarkisian and John P. Wicker who have works in the Detroit Institute of Arts.
Giacomo was a working WPA artist who accepted commissions, exhibited at the historic Scarab Club and sold works at Detroit Galleries from 1920s-1950s. From 1962-1973, he also worked for the respected JL Hudson Gallery situated within the Hudson's Department Store on Woodward Avenue in Detroit. Hudson's Gallery concentrated on 20th century artwork and Spicuzza was known for his realism style and primarily worked with oil painting.
It is unclear when, and why he moved to Wisconsin, but he passed away in Milwaukee in 1987.
